Summer 2015
Archaeological – Ethnographic project in Gonies Malevisiou- Crete
by the University of Kent
Wishing to share the knowledge of the archaeological research with the local inhabitants,
a workshop was organized in collaboration with the Cultural Association of Gonies.
An archaeologist ( Celine Murphy) and a potter ( Vassilis Politakis) together with the local inhabitants indentified clay sources in the village’ s vicinity, modelled clay objects consisting primarily in figurines with the use of techniques inspired by the Minoan ones and built a Minoan-style pit.
By tracing these production steps, it became possible to understand the limitations and the potentialities that clay offered past craftspeople in their material expression.
